This module explains ways in which the operator can take care of the equipment he uses by keeping it in good condition, inspecting it regularly and assisting with repair work on it.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this workshop, learners will be able to:

  • understand the causes of equipment problems and their impact on production,
  • understand the role of the operator in preventing equipment problems,
  • understand the principles and tasks of Autonomous Maintenance – (preventing equipment problems, identifying problems and fixing problems),
  • understand the 7 steps of Autonomous Maintenance,
  • have practical experience in cleaning equipment, and developing Autonomous Maintenance schedules.

Customisation required

The trainer will be required to work hand-in-hand with the management to obtain the following kinds of information:

  • what equipment problems and breakdowns cost the company per year in terms of lost production time and maintenance costs,
  • details about requirements for lubrication, inspection and reporting problems,
  • details of the company’s Autonomous Maintenance Implementation plan and the team’s   Clean and Tag exercise,
  • information about the new role definitions for operators and tradespersons,
  • details of further, in-house Autonomous Maintenance Training.

Summary of practical exercises

  • Equipment Condition Audit: The team completes an audit sheet on the condition of their equipment and suggests improvements.

Mini Clean and Tag: The team spends time cleaning and tagging a piece of equipment, and draws up a cleaning schedule, a lubrication chart, an inspection schedule and an action plan for improving that piece of equipment.
